How Kiera levelled up to get back to the life she wanted to lead

Kiera, a 29-year-old Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner and intermittent catheter user from
Aberdeen, Scotland, shares her story of when she first started using an intermittent catheter.

She talks about her love for acrobatic aerial hooping classes and how getting a pass for accessible toilets has helped her better enjoy the live music she loves.

It started around ten years ago after she was told she had a damaged bladder wall, a condition that explained the frequent need to urinate she’d been experiencing.

“At first, I was given oral medications. They didn’t work at all. Then they tried medication for nerve pain, but it just made me drowsy.” Treatments such as bladder instillation and hydrodistention also didn’t work. “After that was botox injections. It made me worse. I couldn’t empty, and that was a scary time.”

Kiera then went back to her doctor, “devastated.” Her subsequent referral was to specialists, which she says was “one of the best things that had happened to me. Once I found out about intermittent catheters and got my head around using them, I could really start getting back to life.”
