CASE STUDY - NHS GREENWICH CCG
PATIENT POPULATION: 277,796
ANNUAL WOUND MANAGEMENT SPEND: £593,000
Scenario & Solution
Following the launch of the NHS Innovation, Health and Wealth: Accelerating Adoption and Diffusion Document in 2011, a partnership steering group was setup between commissioners, providers and industry to provide wound care dressings to patients via the community nursing service.
ConvaTec Complete™ was introduced as part of the project. This is a value added service, which allows the users to audit, manage the formulary, provide education and evaluate effectiveness.
The ConvaTec Online Management System (CCOMS) is an internet-based ordering system which is integral to the success of this pilot. Monthly feedback meetings are held with the project.
Results
• £81k (12%) reduction in annual wound care spend.
• Off formulary dressings usage was eliminated leading to complete adherence to formulary.
• Evidenced improvement in patient experience.
• Significant reduction in wasted dressings.
• District nurse productivity was improved.
• Stock at each base ensured the appropriate dressing being available for the patient at the 1st assessment.
• Convatec usage reports and reviews facilitated good financial management and insight for Greenwich CCG Medicines Management
FEEDBACK
“With appropriate training and support, formulary products have improved the quality of care for the patients, improved productivity for the provider teams, improved healing (although not evidenced). This is inferred from the faster availability of products and thus quicker access to appropriate products and hence improved healing and reduced complications, reduced worsening of wounds and reduced dressing changes. All of these has contributed to the quality of care for the patients.”

CASE STUDY - NHS ROTHERHAM CCG
PATIENT POPULATION: 255,000
ANNUAL WOUND MANAGEMENT SPEND: £614,289
Scenario & Solution
Stakeholders from Medicines Management, Tissue Viability, District Nursing and ConvaTec formed the Wound Care Pilot Steering Group.
It was agreed that wound dressings would not be prescribed via the normal FP10 route. Instead they were to be ordered direct from a supplier, by a designated administrator and delivered to two central stock points. The dressings were then readily available for nurses to collect each day prior to visiting their patients.
Results from monthly case load audits were presented at each steering group meeting and summarised the total number and types of wounds and dressings used; levels of infection; formulary adherence and associated costs.
